I created objects from a mythical civilisation – perhaps past, perhaps future – using a combination of bone china, glass, silver, cotton thread and Egyptian paste. The resulting collection of ambiguous, fragmentary ‘heirlooms’ evokes ideas of memory, intimacy and decay. I was inspired by the emotional investments that we place in apparently mundane possessions.

The combination of bone china and Egyptian paste, two materials from very different eras yet with similar symbolic associations – of high value and delicacy – also speaks to a culture of precious objects stretching across millennia. The ‘repaired’ pieces laid next to piles of fragments invokes both the limits of materiality and the ultimate fate of all objects: the return to dust.
